Gary Habermas’ book “The Thomas Factor: Using Your Doubts to Draw Closer to God” is online for free. Habermas wrote this book for ‘Christians who doubt’ as well as those who are just a little unsure about their faith. He categories doubt into three types: Factual, Emotional, and Volitional. In order to address ones doubt, one must first diagnos what type of doubt you have so you can have the right remidy.
In reading this, I would have to say that I have aspects of all three types of doubt. The factual type was probably the initial one, but they all seem to feed off each other. Many of his comments are very insightful, and since Habermas struggled for years with doubt his comments carry more weight with me. One of the problems I had with the book is that it briefly throws in “evidences” for God, which I really don’t think carry much weight. I will try to go into more details in future posts.
The book is a quick read, and is a great starting point in discussing and thinking about doubt. His analysis of the many different kinds of doubt is also a great aspect of this book. And the best part is that this book is FREE!
